HOW NOT TO UPHOLSTER A CHAIR…

Do you remember when I said that I was going to attempt to reupholster this chair

master bedroom 073

I removed the old fabric

tried to take the cheap way out and use some foam that I purchased at an estate sale

I used the old foam as a template

Then, I put the foam and some batting on the chair

I was doing good (I think) until I started stapling the foam to the chair….

I don’t think I was suppose to have done that! I’m too ashamed to show you the rest of the chair.  Do any of you know of some good “how to” posts out in ‘blogland’ that will help me get this right?  If not, I’m going to have to pay to get this done…

have you tried youtube? there should be a good how-to video there. i recently saw someone talk about a good how-to for upholstering, but can't remember for sure who it was . . . maybe michelle (3 men and a lady)?

You know that upholstery tacks cover a multitude of "sins" or you can get some get some matching ribbon and use the ribbon and tacks together for a decorative trim.

You don't need to staple the foam to the frame, instead wrap the batting or an underlining fabric around the foam to the underside (or possibly the frames sides in the case of this chair) and staple that material down, holding the foam and batting in place. You can use any solid fabric...an old pillow case, sheet, etc, that won't show through the fabric you'll be using to cover the seat cover. Don't give up!!

I agree Janells advice - remove the staples from the foam and add more batting and smooth down to the edge of the chair, next use fabric lining or whatever cheap fabric and staple in place and the replace your fabric.

Have you husdand help the fabric in place once you start stapling the fabric underneath the frame.

I also agree with Janell's advice, and I agree with Dayka's advice, too. You Tube taught me to reupholster big furniture (unfortunately, it did not teach me to stop procrastinating after I've ripped the old fabric off, but I digress).

Don't give up!

www.centsationalgirl.com has several great tutorials with great illustrations on how to reupholster ( among other things.) All the best.
BTW I am a silent reader...I guess no more :)
