HACKING MY IKEA LIGHT FIXTURE

Hi everyone! Thank You so much for your comments on my sons room yesterday!
A few of you wanted to know the steps I took to cover the light fixture used in the room

I started with the MELODI pendant light from IKEA:

Originally, I planned to use mod podge to cover it with some vintage maps that I have

But, I really didn't want to do that to my maps! So while at Wal-Mart, I was walking down the craft isle, and I saw a roll of twine. And a light bulb went off! I instantly thought of the rope on boats and the old boats I saw when we were on vacation. Suddenly, I got the idea to wrap the light fixture with the twine!

I used twine

and hot glue and glue gun

I suggest you use a low temperature glue gun, but I don't have one so of course I burned all of my fingers!

Then all you have to do is glue the twine to the fixture

Keep going and make sure you glue the twine as close togather as you can

This is how I applied the glue as I went around the fixture. I tried to make sure it was as close as possible!

This is how it will look once your done

I like it with the light off or on! But, I really love how you see the lines of twine when the light is turned on

So, will any of you attempt this project for your own space? I'd love to hear about your plans! Oh, and what about using mod podge to cover it with some type of paper or fabric?

Have a great day!

I am most definitely going to remember this idea and use it somewhere, someday. And reading my comment restated, can I make an amendment?! It doesn't sound as effusive as I meant it to sound..."you are getting better" doesn't convey how incredibly impressed I was seeing this room and how all the areas were so well thought out and your "theme" carried throughout the room in a creative way that doesn't look like a formula. You've added in some surprises and it all works together...fabulous job!

I really really like this. I am moving to a new apartment THIS WEEKEND!! and I am hoping to find places to use hanging pendants, this hack might be in my future.
I suppose it could also work on regular lampshades, right?

This is such a cute idea. You did a great job. I think it is perfect for the Big Boy's room. The room turned out so precious too.

My model home "copycat" room in Houston is coming along nicely. I just selected the bedding for the house and I'm really excited to get everything installed. I've got about another month to wait for that though.

Have a great weekend! xo, C-
